All over the Netherlands, volunteer language coaches support newcomers in learning Dutch. Volunteers often want to know more about bridging differences with 'their' buddies. Knowledge about 'cultures' often does not provide enough practical tools. What does work is building sensitivity for the other and practical conversation techniques.

To this end, we developed the Difference Aware training course, commissioned by Stichting Het Begint met Taal, the national platform for language coaching. Coordinators of language coaching projects can request the training from us.

Super that the training was given by experts by experience. It was for me a new introduction to other cultures and renewed awareness of own skills. Instructive and super fun!

Results & insights

In the training, (language) volunteers develop difference-sensitive communication skills by practicing with real-life examples. Participants work with conversation skills around differences, culture shock moments and dilemmas and a recipe for difference-sensitive work. They will also receive information and tools to use in their work as language volunteers and will work with different canvases to create awareness about (cultural) differences.

The training is also suitable for other audiences. For example for employees or volunteers of a foundation, municipality, social organization or employer. In fact, anyone who wants to learn more about difference-sensitive communication skills and practice them in a fun, interactive setting. The trainers are newcomers with lived experience.
