On January 1, 2022, a new Integration Act will come into force and many of the central government's tasks will be transferred to municipalities. What are the consequences and how do we want to organize this for newcomers to the Netherlands? OpenEmbassy Renée Frissen shares both her concerns and her insights in two articles and a podcast.
De Groene Amsterdammer asked Renée for advice for the (in)formateur.
- Do not use the lives of the people who are already here as a deterrent for people who want to come here.
- Make social connections the number one priority in your integration policy.
- Listen to the people involved in everything you do in the field of integration.
- And if you are involved with the new Integration Act, make sure you learn how it works together.

With Lex Bohlmeijer
"When we ask newcomers: what do you need to really feel at home? The answer is: work and a sense of belonging. Those are precisely the two things that are difficult to find in the Netherlands."
In Social Issues, Renée Frissen writes about the importance of integration as a supplement to civic integration.
“If we aspire to enable newcomers to participate to their full potential and feel at home, we need more than just a policy strategy on integration. A vision on integration is essential. The British framework can help governments to not only focus on their own processes and organization, but to start from the experience of newcomers and actively seek cooperation with the formal and informal networks that are necessary to organize integration locally."
The British framework, called the “Indicators of Integration Framework," , has OpenEmbassy at OpenEmbassy since its inception. We use it as a lens through which to view the support we provide to newcomers. And in all our projects, we also collect data based on this model of 14 indicators.
