Knowledge by, for and about newcomers

Rebuild, return and reconnect

Client

Ministry of Justice and Security

Duration

2024–2025

Project description

The primary goal of this project is to gain insight into the feelings, needs, and perspectives of displaced Ukrainians living in the Netherlands, as well as internally displaced Ukrainians within Ukraine.

The project also aims to provide useful insights to stakeholders to develop evidence-based policies that address the specific challenges faced by these communities.

Urgency

The urgency of this project is underscored by the imminent expiry of the Temporary Protection Directive in March 2026, which will directly affect approximately 127,100 displaced Ukrainians currently residing in the Netherlands. Important questions that will be addressed include: Who plans to return to Ukraine? Who plans to stay and integrate into Dutch society? And who will take steps to rebuild ties with Ukrainian communities and contribute to the reconstruction of the country?

Results & insights

At the end of the project, we will deliver a detailed and useful report containing:

  • Key insights from the guided sessions.
  • Data-driven recommendations for policy improvement.
  • Increase understanding among stakeholders of the experiences and expectations of displaced Ukrainians.
  • Strengthened cooperation between Ukrainian communities and Dutch stakeholders to promote trust and sustainable engagement.
