Safety is important for feeling at home in the Netherlands. It strengthens your relationships with authorities and your involvement in society. Exclusion mechanisms, racism, and discrimination can undermine your sense of safety.
Insights
When people are placed outside the regular system, they often experience a sense of insecurity that makes it extra difficult to effectively engage with official agencies.
Undocumented people are excluded from the system and, in many cases, are disappointed in both governments and organizations. Combined with the fact that people are extra cautious about their privacy and identity for security reasons, this makes their initial position (understandably) one of mistrust. We saw this particularly among people who were older and had been living in the Netherlands for a longer period of time.

How can we increase social safety?
How can we increase social security in addition to legal security? By building a social safety net as a "backup" for legally regulated security.
